“How To Find A Sober Mentor”
I had someone come to the site the other day after typing in “I can’t find any sober mentors”. Or maybe it was, “I don’t have any sober mentors”. Either way I thought, “Why not….”?
If people decide to get sober they usually go to a meeting where other people who’ve decided to get sober might go. These meetings are generally divided into three groups of people:
- Those that recently decided to get sober.
- Those working at getting sober.
- Those who are sober.
Here is another generalization:
If you’re in the first group, group two and three have people who have done things you haven’t. If you’re in group two, or if you’ve been in and out of group two before, group three has done some things you haven’t.
Although it’s a generalization it should make clear some things about sober meetings.
When I decided to get sober (after I could walk and talk again) I started looking for people who were well into group three. I made myself known to them. I introduced myself and asked if I could talk to them. All of them said – Yes. Some of them became my “Sober Mentors”. Today they are my friends and associates.
If you want a sober mentor, or someone to talk to, I suggest you start by introducing yourself.
