In the previous article I mention – there was no such thing as a magic pill. This morning, about the time my feet hit the floor, I got a feeling that I could only identify as sad. There was no other way to look at it.
Not only did I feel sad but the degree of sadness was on the same scale as terror. If the top of the fear scale might be called terror. That’s where this sad feeling would register – total, awful, overwhelming sadness. It only lasted for a second or two. I can’t even say why it was there.
What it did was remind me of the sadness I felt in the midst of withdrawal from heroin. The physical symptoms of withdrawal aren’t what get most of us – it’s the mental, emotional part.
When Bill Wilson was struggling with depression he was told by Dr. Abram Hoffer to take Niacin (Vitamin B3). Bill got over his depression and tried to pass the information on to Alcoholics Anonymous. Ever hear about vitamins in an AA meeting? Why not?
So I guess there might be something that comes close to qualifying as a magic pill after all. Except it’s not magic and not necessarily a pill. If you or someone you know suffers from depression, watch this Food Matters Video. (The part about depression, Bill W. and Dr. Hoffer is about half way into the video.)

I read about Bill’s Niacin thing in an aside in a Harpers article called The Drunk Club so googled Niacin recovery. Actually to see if Narconon’s purification program would be listed. This program is a total recovery from the adverse effects of toxic chemicals and drugs based on the catalyst Niacin and balanced with the rest of the vitamin and minerals needed for a well balanced recovery. I did the program in 1984. They use the same methods for recovering for heroin to drunks. The program wasn’t developed for recovery but instead to handle the impediment nuclear test were causing Scientologist pursuing spiritual rather than physical rehabilitation. Narconon started in the prisons of California, using these Scientology methods as drug rehabilitation program back in the 70s, I believe. You might want consider you’re way behind the curve concerning this issue.
Eric,
You make sense up until the “impediment nuclear test” phrase – then you are writing in gibberish. Can you be more specific? Thanks.
What’s the connection between Niacin and Narconon? Is Narconon a program using Niacin or a nutritional approach to drug addiction?
Exceptional thought about magic pills! Have any bad effect of Narconon program?
