It’s okay. It’s normal. What else is there?
After all, we live in ourselves. What else would we think about besides ourselves. In truth we are the center of the universe – everything, the entire universe revolves around us.
Earth is a microscopic speck relative to the universe. There is no place more important. There is no person in the universe more important than you. Is this the road to selfishness, cruelty, disregard for others? Why would it be?
All these character traits that we might think of as negatives have nothing to do with being stuck on ourselves. It doesn’t come from thinking about ourselves first. It comes from being mistaken about the self we’re stuck on. If anything I think we should get more involved with ourselves.
What seems to be happening now days is a tendency for people to be more “Stuck” on something besides themselves. Like someone else – a celebrity, girlfriends, boyfriends, political agendas and so on. In the short little time here and now what could be of less value than politics? What is the attraction to the imaginary life of Fame? Do fans find themselves so uninteresting? Of such little value that they seek to live vicariously through – or become someone else?
I would say get into ourselves even more. Become more self obsessed. Get more involved, go deeper, look farther into the self and explore the deepest pathways of the mind. Spend time in silent concert with the rhythm of life that flows through each of us. Seek that which is not readily noticed. Ferret out the secrets and get to the center of the all that is you.
I think that if a person survives this degree of – extreme self involvement - the self is found to be a different thing than originally sensed. The self may become less solid, less separate, more expansive. We may find that we didn’t understand the self at all. That we knew not what we lived through and that we have been living as the whole – looking out at itself from a unique viewpoint – not available to any other at any time. The height of super individualism.
Never before has anyone looked at the world as we – as individuals - have. Maybe it will never again. Probably we’ll add something that can never be changed and our individual passing creates an entirely changed universe. One thing I know for sure: Once this self absorption is complete we will be able to offer up our true selves to others – without fear, without pretense and with a speck, at least, of wisdom. We have become more practical – probably more useful – as Self Awareness is infectious.
