If you’re fortunate enough to be part of the “Great Big Member Forum, at DgsWilson.com” then you’ll be familiar with my quest to – get to the bottom – of the whole love thing.
I was reading my little Alan Watts book and he was talking about “Not knowing who we are”. I’ve written some articles along these lines, as I get things to write. What has escaped me is the “reality” of the connectedness idea. I have to conclude it’s more than an idea, like oxygen is more than an idea.
If we were asked if we understood our connection to oxygen, we might say that we know we need oxygen to live. If we were asked to define oxygen and it’s relationship with physical life we might start to get a little lost. We might say that oxygen is a molecule. How many understand molecular science? How many can really explain it to someone else in a way that is easily understood? For most of us there is really just the idea that we need oxygen. Most would just say we need air.
The point is that we have an idea of our connectedness to air and breathing and no one questions this relationship. These leads me to the idea of connectedness. I’m just attempting to set up a discussion on connectedness and it’s inverse – separateness. When we are here, on this planet, we are connected to the physical processes that sustain us. Break this connection and we’re gone. The body quits working and we’re gone.
So, even though we don’t really understand all that’s going on here – we don’t doubt it. We don’t spend time puzzled or confused about our connection to the physical world - that which is apparent via the senses. At least not as far as oxygen is concerned. How about energy? Do we have a direct, obvious, understandable connection with energy? Isn’t energy sort of like oxygen, in the sense that, we know it’s there but we don’t really know what it looks like? Isn’t it a little hard to tell others about?
So here we’ve made a reasonable comparison between two things that we know exist but we really don’t know much about. In this sense we have only some ideas about each. Is it necessary to know more? Not to live it isn’t. How about to live more abundantly? Is there something we can do to live more abundantly? You may know that I got this “Live more abundantly” line from the Bible. It’s right in there with “Love”. Is there a connection between the two? Do we know what that connection is, or even what is being discussed?
Well, I for one did not. Did not as in ever, last night and probably, for the most part, right now. Let’s just suppose for now that we all want to live more abundantly. Let’s say, living more abundantly means being happier and enjoying ourselves to the fullest. I use these as definitions because I doubt I’d get a lot of argument as to whether these are universally desirable conditions. Okay, so how can we tie this together in a way that makes sense and becomes meaningful and useful and not just another course in esoteric nonsense?
Love and Connectedness
We understand our connection with oxygen, even if we don’t understand what it is, or how it works. This connection results in the energy of movement. Break it – no movement. Isn’t that how we check to see if something is alive? Don’t we look for some movement? If they’re asleep we look to see if the movement of breathing is there, the rising and falling.
Let me just run through an idea about energy real fast. If we were ask what was essential to staying alive, what would we say? Air, water, food, heat? What is that stuff? Can we define any of it? We’ve already looked at air. We also touched on energy but lets look for a better understanding of that whole energy idea. What keeps us alive here on earth is really energy. All living things are living because they are getting the energy they need. There is only one source of this energy. The Sun.
All the energy available here comes from the Sun. There is a system here that acts like a storage unit for this energy. We call these storage units plants. The energy from the Sun arrives on the planet and the plants gather that energy, use some of it to produce other things, and stores some of it. One of those other things we are all familiar with is – Oxygen. The animal kingdom gets some energy directly from the sun. An obvious example is heat. The rest of the energy we need to survive comes from plants. I don’t know what the exact percentage is, but if I said 90% of the necessary life energy is stored in plants I think I’d be safe.
Air, water, food and heat is energy – and it comes from the Sun. The next time someone asks us what we need to survive we can say – Energy. Now comes the drifty part. We now understand energy a little better and we understand our connection to it. But I was going to talk about love.
We are in the midst of a movement in the evolutionary process. I’m not talking about Darwinism. That’s just a sort of religious science sect. I’m referring to the phenomena of change. The movement I’m talking about calls for a shift in our energy, or frequency. Remember the Energy/Movement connection. This, ” Energy Shift”, calls for us to be in the energy, or movement, of Love. What I want to do is make this a little clearer. People have said, love your neighbor, love is the answer, you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else – and a whole raft of similar advice. The question that instantly arises in every being is, What is Love?
Lets say this: If Life is a result of our connection to energy – Love is a result of our connection to energy. Why say that? Let me give this example:
For the past three days I have been feeling, Alone. I know I’m not alone, which doesn’t seem to matter. I even had to look closely at the feeling for two and a half days before I could give a name to it. It was there – and I watched it, felt it, and sought to understand it. Yesterday I put a name on it and this morning I understood why it was there. It was the result of the imaginary condition of – Separateness. I’d been pretty much submerged in this “Shift in Consciousness” business.
Like I said, I was reading Alan Watts for the who knows time. Watching videos of Terrence McKenna and Rupert Sheldrake. Trying to fathom the idea of Oneness and gain understanding of the whole love as energy idea and I just wasn’t gettin’ it and wasn’t feelin’ it and I just felt disconnected.
It was obvious to me – I wasn’t part of this movement.
This morning I wake up and the little voice/sentence says – Fear is the sense of separation, Love is the sense of connectedness.
Ten minutes later, as I sat in my meditation place, I saw ( a memory from a photograph ) deep space and the filamentary connections that exist throughout the universe.

This is what, at some telescopic power, we might see inside our bodies. Obviously this description is not precise, I’m not teaching a science course. I’m attempting to give people pictures to think about. Kind of looks like those images of brain cells doesn’t it?
When I think about the reality of being connected I think of these pictures. They represent the “Energy of Life” for me. They pretty much represent my current concept, (was that a pun?) of Life. I can see, and accept, my connection with this stuff. When I came to this point, still in my chair, the sense of “Alone” disappeared.
It’s easy for most people to see that love and fear are the poles on the emotional scale. If we can say oneness and separateness, or being apart from, results in one or the other emotion – we’re closing in on some understanding. If we can see that – being a part of – is the same as – being apart – we’re even closer. Is an Apple a part of a tree? Or is Apple and Tree – One? There is no – one – without the other. They are one that makes one again, and again. Are we a part of Life? Any closer? Can we be a part of Life and not be Life? What defines Apple Tree as Apple Tree? What defines Life? Apple and Apple Tree are inseparable. We have named Apple fruit. Apple Tree from Apple? Apple Tree as fruit?
I just wanted to mix that up until it started to lose it’s beginning and end. Kind of put our ideas in a bowl and mix them up till they disappear into the thing itself. The only place a difference can be conceived – is where we use a language.
Here’s the deal, consider that this emotional scale, from apart to one, or separated to connected, is like a frequency spectrum – like the musical scale:
Disconnected results in a frequency whose vibrational energy is an emotion we call Fear.
Connected results in a frequency whose vibrational energy is an emotion we call Love.
I can’t complete this today. For one thing, I really haven’t got anymore and the other – Footballs on. Besides, someone else can keep adding on to it below….That’s what comments are for.
